English

At Great Sampford Primary School, the English Curriculum consists of:

Reading

  • Children in EYFS follow EYFS Framework and Key Stage 1 & 2 follow the National Curriculum. They use reading texts that are closely linked to their phonics. As well as books available to read for pleasure. Children in Key Stage 2 aspire to become ‘Diamond Readers’.
  • Whole class reading sessions take place daily from Year 1 to Year 6. These sessions follow the idea of the 'Reading VIPERS' and explore the comprehension and understanding of the text. EYFS children follow the scheme ‘The Drawing Club’ to enhance their vocabulary with a love of reading.

Writing

  • Carefully designed text-led learning journeys, with a clear starting point and end outcome.
  • Differentiated tasks which are designed to support and challenge all learners.
  • Opportunities to apply taught skills in other areas of the curriculum.
  • Effective use of well prepared lessons based on the ‘Talk for Writing’ initiative.

Spelling

  • Daily phonics sessions in Early Years and KS1, following an accredited phonics programme - Twinkl.
  • Sessions focussing on the Statutory Spelling Lists and rules for each year group.
