About our School

Great Sampford Primary School is a small rural primary school with about 85 pupils currently on roll.

These children are split into 4 classes:

  • Robin Class - Early Years
  • Puffin Class - Years 1 and 2
  • Swift Class - Years 3 and 4
  • Eagle Class - Years 5 and 6.

The school was established as a Board School in 1876 to provide an education for the children of the village. However, we now welcome children from many other of the surrounding villages, such as Finchingfield, Weathersfield, Thaxted, Steeple Bumpstead, Radwinter, Hempstead, Stambourne and Haverhill.

We continue to work hard as a team to constantly improve the quality of the children's learning environment.  As a result, we are able to offer a well-resourced school with fantastic outdoor space, a large multi-purpose hall, generously proportioned classrooms, a library and a purpose-built kitchen space for all the children to use.

The outside environment boasts a vast amount of space for children to enrich their learning experience, including:

  • A hard-surfaced playground
  • An all-weather astro court
  • Outdoor gym equipment
  • Two climbing frames
  • Picnic area
  • Field big enough for the whole school
  • Access to the village green if needed
  • Sensory area for Forest Schools
  • Garden space

We believe that computing plays an important role in everyday life and use a range of MacBooks and iPads throughout the school, enhanced with our 3D printer and interactive boards in each class.

When the pupils enter Eagle Class, they also embark on a carefully structured transition programme to ensure that their transfer to secondary school is as smooth as possible. Currently, our Year 6 children transfer to a range of schools including: Saffron Walden County High School, Joyce Frankland Academy, Hedingham School, HRS, Herts and Essex Girls School and Linton Village College.
